Millennium Health and Mauka
Powering ahead with data.
Millennium Health and Mauka Technology worked together to create a higher data-quality environment, faster time-to-use for data, analytics as a foundation for decision-making, and consistent reality across all business units.
The Limitation.
Rapid growth and innovative business units were creating disparate views of the business across the enterprise.
Millennium partnered with Mauka for its deep experience in data, domain knowledge, and understanding of driving change in large-scale data environments.
Millennium's goal was to create a data-empowered organization from a collection of splintered information silos. The rapid pace of growth had forced different business units and departments to collect and manage their own data. While necessary, this resulted in disparate versions of the truth among these silos. Reconciling these truths, for even a moment in time, took great effort and produced low confidence in a unified reality.
Millennium and Mauka created a data-empowered organization that was able to freely consume data and maintain a consistent reality throughout the organization. Mauka's Axis data services enabled faster, more distributed decision making throughout Millennium departments and business units, while maintaining their autonomy and choice of how they consumed the data.
The Technology.
Everyone is right.
Mauka started off with lightweight data governance to gain immediate understanding of proper data ownership and stewardship. This allowed departments to share their data with others - creating a new level of definition and quality.
More than data being wrong, the disparate realities were a result of different perspectives, definitions, and rules. Each department had valid views of the data, but those did not always represent other department views. Combining the data, establishing rules, stewards and tie-breakers let each department control their attributes, and use the correct authoritative sources.
Establishing data governance, ownership and stewardship helped create transparency and trust throughout the organization.
Authority and augmentation.
Focusing on the most important data elements, Mauka quickly created a data mastery framework that clarified data ownership, stewardship and quality requirements. This allowed the core data to be curated by the appropriate owners, and shared throughout the organization as the authoritative source.
This also allowed other departments and business units to consume authoritative data elements and augment that with their own, department-specific data to meet their local needs with high-quality, enterprise-consistent results.
Mauka then created the Millennium Open Warehouse. The open warehouse was an enterprise data source that allowed data consumers to extract or connect to data using tools of their preference.
The open warehouse implemented granular control of data access. By doing this, Millennium was able to move knowledge and intelligence to the "edge" and distribute decision making to the most appropriate parts of the organization.
Why it matters.
Trust and performance.
The open warehouse and data stewards created transparency and trust throughout Millennium. This data socialization led the entire organization to embrace data-driven decision making and metrics-based performance management.
Other significant results included improved organizational alignment and cost savings from reduced errors and more readily-available data.
